About

midwinter 2025

“Is he — quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion.”

“That you will, dearie, and no mistake,” said Mrs. Beaver; “if there's anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they're either braver than most or else just silly.” ~ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis

It seems the more I grow in my faith, the more I sense my knees knocking in the presence of a holy God. What does that mean? It means that I have a growing awareness of my insufficiencies in comparison to an increasing knowledge of holiness. It means less reflecting on me and more curiosity for the awe, wonder and foreboding power of God, who chose to rescue me from incurable depravity. It also means more personal transitions of courageous self-surrender while God's power fills the total stage.

With this issue of Evergreen, we introduce the year's theme of being "poor in spirit." We focus on what this attribute might look like in terms of authentic faith. What might it look like to be fully dependent on God while encountering His presence? It might look like obedience in the midst of fear and trembling.

“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5
